Holiday Giant Robot Update.

Happy Holidays everyone, here are just some finished mechanical design line art of "The Pachyon" the titular robot of my upcoming comic of the same name. I'll try to get on a more frequent posting schedule pretty soon. In the mean time check out the development blog for the game I've been helping work on Guts N Glory with some artist friends. It's planned to be the very first nearly all plus size girls videogame.

Here are some in process previews of actual pages from my upcoming comic Pachyon as promised. Below are the finished line art for pages 2, 5, 7, 10 and 13 of the 25 page comic. They appear without text, color or shading.

Process for Comic cover Illustration and Character Concepts

Hello everyone, hope you all had a good Thanksgiving weekend. I come with new art updates for the week.  I'm still fine tuning the pages for the first chapter of "Pachyon" the adventure web coming that will be premiering online next year, and I wanted to share my process for coming up with the original cover art that helped me decide on a final illustration that I've used for small promotion so far.

The first step is the sketch, for the sake of time I produced the illustration totally digital starting with a quick rough line drawing using blue line art. Using limited opacity I begin to ink over the rough drawing in a separate layer once the layout and posing for the illustration is mapped out. Below is what the image looked like as I was fine tuning the line art.

After the first stage of inking I would go in and clean up the line art which I would then color, but I decided to put this piece down for a while and focus on some promotional artwork. Below is yet another composition I tried out, this time I started doing some coloring before the final line art was done, I like the sketchy quality to it, but the mechanical designs don't look quite right so I put this one aside as well.

Below is the new composition meant to imitate a 1970-1980's super hero robot cartoon or japanese animation like this one:

From memory I composition something along those same lines with the main characters in front and the title robot the Pachyon looming behind them in the background, the Title is positioned on a separate layer in the appropriate position. After this comes the final line art.

The final line art is produced on a separate layer, white fill spaces are created beneath each foreground character to further place them over the background. This stage is probably my favorite part but it also takes me the longest time.

The next stage in the image below is where the color finally starts coming in, background art is colored on its own layer and the white fills on the foreground characters are turned purple to work as an under painting or base color.

The details in the background are further developed on the bottom layers while staying consistent with the blue tone of the piece while the characters are painted on a layer higher over the purple under painting. This is the finished painting an it was completed in about 8-12 hours using dark to light rendering technique in Adobe Photoshop CS3 with a Wacom Intuos 3 Tablet. Notice the green subtle glow created with the airbrush tool to help further separate the characters from the background.

I still haven't finished the cover illustration for the first chapter but it will be posted along with the first chapter once its completed. Below are some more concept sketches for the characters from Pachyon in order:  Aith, Cheryl Linn, Xola, Leopold Mecco, Luther, Seben and Quasi Falconi. This is probably the first picture with all of the eventual main cast together. Done with Faber Castell ink pens.

Below is another Promotional Illustration I've began working on showcasing more of the main characters from the first three chapters. It is still in the sketch phases and I will most likely color it digitally in Photoshop sometime this weekend.

Next I will be sharing a few small previews of pages from the first chapter of the comic.

Characters Tempes and Tsumi digitally painted in Adobe Photoshop, they will be featured as minor characters in my webcomic Pachyon. Below are a few other sketches from the comic project as well.  All character designs seen are by me and produced with a wacom tablet pen in Photoshop or traditionally with pen and ink.
